Researchers from the Bonn University Hospital implanted
pacemaker electrodes into the medial forebrain bundle in the brains of patients
suffering from severe depression with remarkable results: six out of seven
patients, symptoms improved both significantly and rapidly.
The method of “Deep Brain Stimulation” had already been
tested on various structures within the brain, but not with such significant
results. The results of this new study have now been published in international
journal Biological Psychiatry.
After months of deep sadness, a first smile appears on a
patient's face. For many years, she had suffered from severe depression and
tried to end her life numerous times. She and an additional six patients with
treatment resistant depression participated in this study. This is exciting
news for the researchers at Bonn University as patients with a resistance to
treatment may soon have an alternative that produces results for the patients.
